Here is how asphalt shingles roofing is done

Although Asphalt Roofing shingles are pricey, they are made from common and readily available material: non-volatile part of crude oil and limestone aggregates. In Kenya they  are  imported from overseas by    authorized dealers  and roofers   in Nairobi  .A  shingle is usually  rectangular, flat  and flexible and is installed  by     laying this  pieces on the entire outer  surface  of  a  roof deck. According to shingle experts Iko Inc. one piece of their asphalt shingle   measures 1038 mm by 349 mm and weighs approximately 11.6 kg per square meter.Embed from Getty Images

Shingle roofing is recommended for use on roof slopes of between 15 and 85 degrees. But the latest information coming from Iko Inc. claims with concrete evidence, that this limitation do not apply to the newly released Cambridge xtreme shingles. In a few words, this new product can be installed   on roof slopes that   range from 9.5 and 90 degrees. Meaning, they s can be deployed on not only flat  but also on pitched roofs as well as vertical roofs or walls for that matter  .Cambridge xtreme  is  said  to be  watertight, durable  and  strong  with a capacity  to ride  out 22 km/h  of winds  and 60 mm/h  of  rainfall.

Shingle like steel roofing tiles come in a variety of colors depending on the vendor. For example at   Iko Inc. you can choose from either harvard slate, dual black, autumn brown or riviera red.

Here is how to apply the shingles on your roof

First   the roofer will have to erect the  support  structure that  consist of the  ceiling joists , the  rafters, the  ridge  and so on . Then he will construct a roof deck, made of plywood or wooden board   that are exterior grade   and without any warping defects. Proper  ventilation in the roof  must be provided  for, to   allow air  to circulate  between the deck  and  the  insulation layer that is  usually  fixed  next  to  ceiling board. Ideally the air should enter through the soffit & eaves and evacuate through an outlet in the roof ridge. For example Iko Inc.  recommends Armourvent Mult that requires the roofer to use plastic cement and end caps. Also  Iko Armourvent Sanitary – is ideal  for  bathroom and  kitchen because  it has the capacity  to  remove  humidity  from the room  even when it is  raining.Embed from Getty Images

Once the deck is complete, the roofer has to install the underlayment-in other words an inner layer. Experts recommend that the roofer should installs a self-adhesive underlayment, parallel to the eaves.

On the heels of the inner layer, the starter course is laid which for instance could can be Iko Inc. starterStrip or 3-tab super-glass shingles.  Asphalt plastic cement should be used to glue the starterStrip onto the underlayment.

What  follow  here after  is the  installation of the  first, second  third courses of asphalt  shingle  pieces and even more  depending recommendation of the vendor  and  building regulation in your jurisdiction. The shingle are fastened onto the roof by   driving the nails straight into the deck with a hammer. Ideally the roofer will use 4 nails per shingle placed in the nailing lane, roughly 25 cm and 33 cm from each end. For maximum protection of the shingle from wind driven rain they should be cemented at the edges.
